Aluminum foil is formed by repeated pressing using highly polished steel rolls. As the foils get thinner, two layers of foil are usually rolled stacking together to achieve the desired thickness and prevent the sheet from cracking.
The two surfaces that are in contact with the steel roll are glossy, while the two surfaces where the two layers of aluminum foil are in contact with each other are matte.
